Tito’s Handmade Vodka – “Austin, Texas”

I admit I fell for the blatant “quirk appeal” of this beverage, but – c’mon – Tito’s Vodka?!
You’d want to check it out, too. Don’t lie.

So, It’s distilled six times from corn in an olde style pot still. In AUSTIN, TEXAS.
Tito’s is Texas’ first and only (legal) distillery, apparently.

Critical pats on the head abound, yet the product itself leaves a little to be desired. Tito’s website mentions a review by Men’s Journal (?!) which says: “as smooth as anything out of Moscow”. You know what? That’s just not true. Tito’s is good vodka – don’t get me wrong. It’s got a nice flavor to it, but it’s just not really that smooth. With really good vodka, you should be under the impression that you are drinking slightly viscous water. ZERO alcohol burn. You can find this in some French vodkas, some Polish potato vodkas, and – of course – many good Russian vodkas in Russia (not so true of exports).

Tito’s does have a little sting which, at 80 proof, is difficult to justify. But it’s still very drinkable alcohol, and (nit-pickyness aside) Tito himself is clearly still running the operation. That’s punk. See: www.titosvodka.com .

With all the attention Tito’s gets around the world I can’t help but hope that different batches are available to people outside Texas. The Tito’s we get here is the color of diluted corn oil with the distinctive fragrance of kerosene. It is every bit as smooth as a shot of after shave. Cheap Tequila, which seems to be what Tito was aiming at, is far smoother. The $25 they ask for a liter always points me to a classic Mono or even Old Gulag whenever the vodka urge strikes.

Of course, I’ve been homesick and keeping bourbon in the house for a long time … maybe Tito got it together. A trip to Dan’s [Central Texas' regional A-1 booze peddler] may be in order.

You only pay $25?! For a LITER? Hmmmmmmm. Local rate?

Look, maybe I’m biased in wanting to give x-tra credit to ‘the little guy’ (maybe everybody’s been doing that) but Tito’s was, by far, not plastic bottle two-liter grade vodka. It wasn’t even as bad as Stolichnaya!

It wasn’t as great as I had hoped, but wasn’t bottom-shelf either.

I have yet to taste/afford a vodka that didn’t have some kick to it. some day, i guess.

I’ve never liked vodka, but I’ve always wanted to try a good potato vodka. The only thing I’ve ever seen, though, is Chopin. Is it any good? If not, do you know of somewhere I can get something that is? I’m VERY hesitant to drop $40 for a bottle of something I don’t know much about.
