Mauby Fizzz – “Cool Yourself”
When I lived in a mostly Lusophonic neighbourhood in Montreal, it seemed like I had access to an unlimited array of Caribbean sodas and juices. The local shops were frequented by shoppers with a taste for tropicalia.
Even then I would grow jaded and wander over to the West Indian neighbourhoods to pick up the oddities that I couldn’t get locally. Those were days of plenty.
So, I was happy when I recently found a cache of MAUBY SODAS in the very back of a local shoppe. “A cache” = two. I don’t just mean two brands either, I mean two bottles – one of each. Whatever. It was just like old times.

The first one is a relatively tame and simple mauby made by the St. Vincent Brewing Company in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It’s called Hairoun Mauby. It’s what you might call ‘light & refreshing’.

The second one, from the makers of Peardrax and Cydrax, is the (in)famous Mauby Fizzz from Trinidad & Tobago. It’s polarizing, this stuff – like Moxie used to be. They must put straight mabuy bark into every bottle. It’s acrid, caustic soda that (even though sweetened with delicious cane sugar) could still melt soft metals. It’s amazing! Tastes like that really fancy black liquorice that les peuples du Midi are known to eat. If you ever see it anywhere… buy it!
Then send it to me. Because you won’t like it.
